  1. Coke is a brand or a product? It is relatively confusing in telling the difference between a brand and a product. Basically companies make products which are purchased by consumers but brands are built through consumer perceptions, expectations, and experiences about particular product. For example Honda is a company which manufactures cars so cars are the product of Honda and it is the good image of the company’s product which will make Honda as Brand.

  2. Brands on the run by Belinda Arche (The Guardian, 2000) explicitly states that, “The principle difference between an ordinary product and a brand is the intangibles beyond the product itself……product plus personality equals brand.” For example, consider a person simply buying a bottle of water as compared to a health and hygiene conscious person purchasing Nestle Pure Life. People have certain “associations” with the “brand” as compared to simply a physical item or even an unbranded service. Experiential Marketing (2009) by Shaz Smilansky on page 54 talks about the importance of the imagery, advertising and packaging associated with the product…..forming the brand personality. For example Mountain Dew creates an adventurous personality of its brand with its TVCs. Also, Tarang defines itself to the masses by using vibrant colours in its packaging.

  3. Products are something which satisfies needs and wants but, brands are just more than product. Products are those things which firms create, communicate to customers and enter market place. (Please note that products include services). However, brands are how these products are perceived by its intended target audience. Brand is subjective concept whereas product is objective concept. Products can be copied but brands are unique, they cannot be copied. In short, products are made by the companies but brands are made by the consumers. Suppose if you bought Nokia phone then cell phone is product and Nokia is brand.

  4. Product is made by the company in the factory and is purchased by the consumers in exchange of money however; Brands are bought and built by the consumers. Products can be quickly outdated but Brands are long lasting, timeless and unique. In other words brand is what differentiates a product from other competitive products in the marketplace. Product is an object but brand is composed of a name, trademark, logo, and other visual elements such as images, colors, and icons. Laptop is a product and Apple is a brand.

  5. Product can be anything which provide a facility or fulfill a customers need but when you think about that need a specific product provider comes in your mind that is a brand. Product are with time they come and go, brands are unique they always left a strong foot mark in your life. For example, Burger is a product but “Hardees” burger is a brand.

  6. Brand name can be used to refer to products. Products is made by a company for consumers. For example Toyota’s product is cars and brand name is Toyota. Products can be copied and adaptable and flexible to change but brands are unique. Brand usually exist for longer period of time while products are instantly meaningful.
Brand nowadays represents our lifestyle, we feel comfortable with a certain brand; we feel more comfortable with branded product and also it gives self esteem.
To recapitulate, Brand is the appearance of a company and Product is selling in the market to generate profits and also create image for a certain Brand.

  7. The brand Gap by Marty Neumeier states “A band is a person’s gut feeling about a product.service , or organization.”Brand is an intangible asset which fulfills expectation and promise of its customers. product are physically available in market and are used by customers in their daily routine.
for example fries is a product One Potato Two Potato(OPTP) is a brand.
“Products are made in the factory, but brands are created in the mind”.
    -Walter Landor.

  8. Product actually is what we are providing to consumer and brand is what they prefer. Popular product usually become brand and brand name used to refer to the product. Brand have some specific properties like it cannot be copied, consumer makes brand, its timeless and they become meaning full with passage of time. For example Product is beverages and the brand is Pepsi.

  9. Brand is consumer’s perception and experiences with the product or service. Product is manufactured by company , e.g. Fri chicks offers all food items of fast food just like KFC. KFC is a brand as most of the consumers rely and feel comfortable to go for it when they looking for crispy fried chicken items.

  10. Product can be any good or service that is sell/give by one party to another and when we assign any particular symbol or name to that product to make it different from other products it is called brand. Brands are also used to represent or identify the seller.

  11. Brand is basically an intangible, where as a product is tangible. Product can be a product or a service. Product can be copied but brand are unique. A brand helps to recognize a product or service. BRAND is a face of a company and PRODUCT is simply that what company is selling.

  12. Apple is a brand, its the umbrella, the trust, the satisfaction and value guarantee for the consumers, the label, the name. And iPhone is the product which in itself satisfies a need but if this idea would have been from Nokia, the impact would have been clearly different. So product is what caters to the need, the real value, the thing, the utility that gets to the end user and gives value and brand is what makes a product valuable. Its called apple iPhone5 or blackberry bold 9900 and when a product matures to an amazing extent it can in itself become a brand.
” Products are associated with brands and brands are associated with minds”

  13. A product is something which companies make to facilitate or fulfill customers’ needs.
Brands are built through customers’ experiences, perceptions and expectations.Products can be copied or replaced but brands are unique and leave the mark of their identity on customers’ mind.

  14. For me, a product is something that can be found everywhere. You move your eyeballs and you’ll find thousands of products placed in shops. But when you go out of your way, to that one shop, out of the thousand other shops that caught your eye, that’s when you know you’re making your way towards a brand and not a product. A product doesn’t become a brand at the drop of a hat, it takes time. A lot of time. And surviving that time isn’t easy. A lot of products fail during that course of time but the ones that stand till the end, are the ones that are called brands!

  15. i think that products that are very popular they become brand. usually product is a thing that we purchase for money, a product is a tangible thing while a brand is intangible it is somewhere in mind of consumer. a product become brand when it is use by a consumer and a consumer has some experience or expectation with that certain brand. for e.g product that Levi’s makes is jean and Levi’s as a whole is a brand

  16. Products are sold to the consumers whereas brands are created in the minds of the individual. The reason that products and brands are sometimes confused with each other is because a good product embodies the characteristics of its brand in order to stand out in the market. Brands and products go hand in hand because when a consumer buys a product they expect to have a positive and complete brand experience as that is what contributes to consumer perception. If they get all that they expected, they are sure to explore other products of that brand as a relation of trust is built between the consumer and the brand.

  17. Company usually make products and we (consumers) make it a brand. when a consumer buy a certain product/service, he has some expectations, perceptions and emotional associations associated to that product/service that help it to build a brand. you can copy a product, but brands are always unique in its nature and perception and can not be copied. The other major difference is that every product has a life-cycle, but brands can be timeless and possess infinite life. Brands are not build overnight, its take a long time to make a brand. Example is “Olpers” that was just a milk at the time it came into market. Now it has become a brand, a perception that people want to experience.

  18. Product refers to goods/ services offered by an organization to satisfy the need, want, and demand of a certain individual or market whereas branding refers to set of activities an organization carries out in order to create either a image of the company or product or both in the mind of prospective users/ buyers.
From a marketing perspective, a product is anything that can be offered to a market constituted by potential customers that might satisfy a want or need. From a business perspective, a product is any good, artifact or service which can be bought and sold.

In short, a brand is a symbol, name, graphic identity and logotype that allow the effective identification of one company, product or service from its competitors and is able to create an emotional response in the minds and hearts of its customer base.

A brand is the product’s identity, is built around a perception of a product and it represents the first key differentiator of a product in a crowded and highly competitive market.

  19. Products with the personality are known as brand. People develop association with a brand. For example Bournvita has the personality of mental and physical health. Products vanishes with the time but brands are priceless. And products can be copied but brands have their unique value like simple orange juice is a product whereas ‘Nestle’ orange juice is a brand.

  20. A brand is something that a consumer feels. It is the intangible, emotional aspect that a person can relate to, it can be any name, or symbol which has value, history and is recognized by the world at large.
For example, any watch can tell time but a Rolex can do so much more, it shows class, it shows wealth, elegance, taste, stature, so much in so little (size wise). From a sociological perspective, symbols also form a part of our culture, and communication through symbols is also something we all do. A brand for us becomes that symbol, a symbol to communicate who we are, what we are and what we associate ourselves with.
A product is something that can provide merely a functional benefit, for example any computer can compute, but a Vaio can render people speechless, that is the difference between brands and products, the ability to communicate the personality of the consumer with just a symbol.

  21. A brand is more likely to be an individual. It is on the fore front. A brand can have different products to offer. Product is something tangible where as a brand is a “person” offering those products. Brands are primarily unique just as any individual is but products or services can be copied. Moreover, building a brand is a gradual process and the deciding body is ultimately the consumer, products on the other hand are just a result of manufacturing.

  22. Products are prepared by companies in their factories while brands differentiate them in form of name, type, symbol or design from other products e.g watches (products) are made all over the world but once name of ROLEX (brand) is attached to it, it becomes a brand.Brands are created on the basis of customer’s experiences, perceptions and expectations with products and give a feeling of not only satisfaction and prestige but also being exclusive.

  23. I would say Brand is what we call the intangible part of what a product is, brand is a holistic term that contains experiences, perceptions, image, personality. So every brand is a product but every product is not a brand.
    How?

Example, Strategic Brand Management Book says
    Consumers buy, people live
Products fulfill needs. Experiences fulfill desires.
Identity is recognition. Personality is about character and charisma.
Service is selling. Relationship is acknowledgement….. (p69)

  24. A product, when gets the recognition and is appreciated by users, eventually becomes a brand. Over the years we have seen this life cycle of a product becoming a brand and is becoming exchangeable for the word in dictionary for that product. We hear people saying, “He’s wearing Rolex” instead of “He’s wearing a watch”, or “I just had Pringles” instead of “I just had crispy potato chips”. In these examples, simple products have earned them self brand names and have become irreplaceable product them self. No one can now claim that they’ll manufacture Rolex from now on. Therefore, brand is like a superlative form of a product, which cannot be recreated. On the other hand, product is a general term, which can have various brand names associated to it.

  25. Product is anything that can be offered to market that might satisfy a need or want whereas brands are built through consumer perception, expectation and experiences with all products. For example Honda Accord, Honda Civic is the product while Honda is a brand. A product can be copied by a competitor and can be quickly outdated (e.g. now CDs has replaced cassette), while successful brand is everlasting.

  26. The difference between a product and brand is that a product refers to the physical object produced either a physical or a service. Whereas, brand refers to the title given to the certain product or services that is recognizable to the consumers. Product is a complete bundle of benefits or satisfaction that buyers identify when they purchase the product. A brand on the other hand puts an impression to the consumer on what to expect from the product or service being offered. However, a product can be quickly outdated but a successful brand is timeless.

  27. To be very precise, a product is any good or service which is produced for the sake of making a profit and satisfying needs or wants of the customers. Brands however are products which have over the years developed a history and association with certain characteristics. In short all brands are products but all products are not brands.

  28. Brands are the consumer expectation, perceptions and experiences. Because brands are unique like if a company is making products then brand name make that product unique in terms of quality, design, comfort and durability. Brands also reflects personalities. e.g. if you have BMW v Suzuki. Products obsolete with time like products changes when new technology comes according to needs but brands remains the same. Brands also create trust. Like when go in Market we would prefer KitKat or Cad bury rather than other local brand.

  29. Difference between a product and a brand is beautifully explained in Keller that a product is anything which is offered to the public for consumption satisfying their needs or wants. Now this product is not necessarily always a tangible thing as an idea like a social cause could be a product too. Now we already know that there are various products of the same kind in a single category so brand then is this difference between products of the same category satisfying the common needs.

  30. ……..like for instance Campbell soup and a soup you can have from a local shop. The product is soup simple as is used for satisfying a want but of course Campbell’s soup is different in taste etc when compared with the latter. This difference is brand!!

  31. “A brand is therefore more than a product, because it can have products that differentiate it in some way from other products designed to satisfy the same need” – Kevin Lane Keller

A product is a market offering that is catering to a specific need, however a brand is something broader. You could say a product is an objective reality whereas a brand is more about consumer perceptions.

  32. What would you like to choose if you want a car, ” A BMW” or just any car that takes you from point A to point B??

This is the difference between a product and a brand. A brand in this case is BMW and product is anything that can take you from point A to point B. The sophistically labelled products are the brands.

I came across an article when i was searching on the assigned topic. It was a very informative article published in “The Guardian” in 2000, written by “Belinda Arche” who clearly defines the difference between a product and a brand. Anyone who is interested to read could follow up on this link given below:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2000/oct/19/consumerpages

  33. A product is anything that can be offered to satisfy the need or want and create value to its customer. It grows and brings revenue to the firm. Brand supports product and identifies the seller or maker , for example Black berry is an actual product, its services features, design, quality level, packing show its Brand name and Value its product to the satisfaction of the customer on the first sight.

  34. According to me, brand is a sign or symbol of product.. A product makes a brand unique in the market because of its new name, logo which is assigned by marketer… Brand is more than products because it has different attributes which differentiate it from other products..brands create competitive advantages and differentiate customers from other customers..products are made by company but brands are created in the minds of people..for example: all shoes are created same with different styles, colors…this is actually a product but once Hush Puppies, CAT, NIKE logo is put on that shoes, it will become brand…this is the thing which creates difference and competition in the market…

  35. Brand is a sign or symbol of product..

  36. Product is something which is present in the market and can be bought or sold for example mobile phones, car etc.Whereas a brand is a name of a product which is present in consumers mind.A product satisfy consumers needs and wants whereas a brand gives a consumer an extra bit of satisfaction and confidence. If i take my example amongst all other mobile phone brands blackberry gives me an extra bit of satisfaction, confidence and pleasure as compare to other brands and important thing to note here is that product(mobile phone)is the same.

  37. Brand refers to the practice of producers burning there mark (brand) on their products. Now this is something consumer think/feel about. Brand is intangible beyond the product itself and is a emotional aspect which consumer can relate to. It can be name, logo, tagline, graphics, taste, scents, sounds, colors, shape.
For example Airtel tone is so much awesome that on the first node we recognize this telecommunication company (Airtel). Many people in Pakistan has also set this tone on their mobile even Airtel don’t exist here. Which means this tone ( composed by A.R Rehman) has allowed them to gain popularity beyond borders.
Product is bundle of tangible and intangible attributes that satisfies consumer needs and is received in exchange of money i.e can provide you with functional benefits. For example a lipstick, vitamin pills or watch can merely satisfy ones needs. But when we use LOREAL lipsticks or RADO watch, then it is just more than just using these products and this more things come from branding

  38. Product is a commodity available in the market while Brand is the recognition of that commodity akin to its market name. How the brand value is generated, it directly relates to the quality vis-a-vis the customer satisfaction.
NIKE is a brand for sportswear products and is valued for its R&D in innovating sports gear. Remember Micheal Pheleps (swimmer) trying out new NIKE swim suits that reduces water friction.

  39. Brand is the big picture, whereas product is the output of a certain brand consumable and tangible in nature. The big difference near me is that brand name is non volatile while a product on the other hand at a certain time stops to exist. Take the example of Volkswagen. The brand is still existing but the 1956 beetle is now obsolete.

  40. Brands and products, difference is very simple brands are the makers of products brands are timeless but products get obsolete though brands get recognized by the products they make and launch in the market like it is simple that products get a boom in their intial stages and then they keep on lingering on therefore products can be replaced or copied by other brands but brands are timeless for example when first Vedio home system (VHS) came there was a boom but with the coming of DVD (VHS) got obsolete and today, most people buy their music in digital format and listen to it on their iPods. The Elvis Presley brand is timeless, but no one buys Elvis music on cassettes anymore. Another example could be of google like when google first came in the market as a search engine but as people tried it and realised that google is the best search engine so when Google recently lauched their new Google+ people got crazy beacuase now they have know the brand google is worth so their product would also be worth.

  41. A product is anything that can be offered to the market that may satisfy the need, want, and demand of a certain individual. Several examples of products are hamburger, fries and soft drinks. A brand may be referred as a trademark, which is legally an appropriate term. It is unique, timeless and cannot be copied by any manufacturer, like McDonald’s and Coca Cola.

  42. Ok so a watch is a product – something that tells you time. But rolex – thats a brand. It differentiates a rolex watch from other watches. That is how a product is different from a brand. Without branding, all items would be like commodities. The only factor at the time of purchase would be price. But brand is something that differentiates one product from others

  43. Companies make product and it can be bought in exchange of money where as brands are built under the umbrella of consumer perception and emotion that consumers has developed for those brands through previous experiences with them.
Product can be copied but brands are unique.
Product can be obsolete whereas brand is timeless
product is just a material object whereas brand is made up of name logo and others visuals such as images ,color and icons.brands may be referred as trademark.
To recapitulate brand is a symbol of a product.

  44. The difference between a product and a brand is that products can become obsolete after sometime but brands are built through consumers expectations, perceptions and experiences. Some products have low emotional involvement which means that such products can be easily replaced for example that does a consumer really cares what brand of milk he is buying or only because the milk is very fresh and includes the fat percentage. Products can become meaningful instantly but it takes more time for a brand to become meaningful. If we take an example of Google, when it was first launched it was just a normal search engine but later people realized that it helps them find information more quickly online. People themselves used the search engine and found out that it really is helpful and fast. So peoples experience was good with Google and they actually thought that its the best search engine.

  45. Over the years, the concepts of marketing have matured and ripened. The laws of marketing have defined some key terms of businesses and distinguished key terms in a very convenient manner. As a result, today we can differentiate in the meaning and essence of product and brand.
A product is a generic term used for a different commodities bearing similar characteristics up to a certain level. Mefenamic Acid is a product which is used as pain killer but when the same product bears the mark of Ponstan Forte, it becomes a brand. A brand actually augments the product by adding both tangible and intangible features to it. A brand is based on how it is positioned, imaged and portrayed to the audience. On the other hand, product basically fits to the physical or chemical structure of the issue,

  46. A product is simply something with a certain function (a map gives you direction, the bread feeds you, clothes that gives you warmth.
“A brand is…more than a product, because it can have dimensions that differentiate it in some way from other products designed to satisfy the same need.” (p.5) For instance what Adil says above, Google, is an excellent example. One can use yahoo, msn, soho and other search engines but most users feel Google can give us better results in searching. That is how Google is more successful as a brand. We even use ‘google’ as a verb nowadays with the meaning ‘I will search it online’. Another word that is playing such a big role in American society is ‘Kleenex’. Kleenex is a brand for tissue (like Rose Petals in Pakistan). When people say ‘Why don’t you rub your nose with Kleenex?’, they mean the tissue.

So, “A brand is something that resides in the mind of consumers”(P.10, Strategic Brand Management). A company can easily have a product, but it takes more effort to make consumers believe it is a brand, which can deliver them more.

  47. Product is something which can be physically offered to a market which may be helpful to someone to get his need done. It is a kind of functional thing. For example, Car is a product which helps people to move around and get at their required places.
Brand is the name or any symbol which differentiates a seller of one product from the others in terms of the way their products fulfill the consumer’s needs. A buyer of any brand can only feel its name and can relate his emotions with its specific name or symbol. Moreover, A brand name explains different characteristics and offerings of its product. For example, Mercedes is a brand but it communicates the specific features of a car. One can judge everything about a product by its brand name.

  48. Product is simply a tangible good/thing/substance which fulfills our needs and wants. Whereas to differentiate the products a brand name is given to each product. Just like we all our human beings and everyone has a specific name.
Now human beings could be different by their face, height, color and specially which makes them superior to others is power of knowledge, personality, goodwill, honesty etc. Same like that brands of same product also differ to each other. For example car is a product and BMW and Mercedes are the brands.

  49. A brand is basically an experience that comes with the promises made by the company and the consumer’s expectations. Products are a means to fulfill that promise and expectations made by the company.

  50. A product can be defined as “Something produced by human or mechanical effort or by a natural process”. It could be tangible or intangible like a soap is tangible and a service is intangible. Whereas a Brand is a trademark identifying a product or a producer and make them unique. It could be a name, symbol or a logo.

  51. A product is something that is made in a factory. where as brand is something that is bought by a consumer. A product can be copied by a competitor.A brand is unique. A product can be quickly outdated. Successful brands are timeless. A brand is what differentiates a product from other competitive products in the marketplace. And it’s grounded in positioning. Remember that word positioning because it’s what that brand is in the mind of the consumer. How they think of it. It’s the personality of that brand. And ultimately the consumer positions the brand. I mean we will try as brand managers to position it. But ultimately it is the perception of the people who buy it. And what makes a company strong is not the product or the service, it is the position that it owns in the mind. so that is why positioning is so important to understand for the people studying marketing or marketing managers or sales executives.

  52. “Brand” is the face of a company and “Product” is whatever company is selling in the market to generate revenue
A product is anything that can be offered to a market constituted by potential customers that might satisfy a want or need. From a business perspective, a product is any good, artifact or service which can be bought and sold.

A brand is a symbol, name, graphic identity and logotype that allow the effective identification of one company, product or service from its competitors and is able to create an emotional response in the minds and hearts of its customer base.

A brand is the product’s identity, is built around a perception of a product and it represents the first key differentiator of a product in a crowded and highly competitive market.

  53. Brand is bigger than or a later more developed stage of a product, product yet has to win customers trust but brand has already won the customer’s trust. The journey of winning customer’s trust converts a product into a brand. A good quality product with lots of loyal customers is the requirement which makes a product a brand. Window shopping can be a good example a brand hunt, where we go for shopping from shop to shop looking for new products that gives a perfect match to our taste and then that unknown product suddenly becomes a brand for us.

  54. Will explain this with an example: Pepsi is the brand and the product is beverages. Brand is an attachment that you develop with the product. For example petroleum jelly is sold under the name of Vaseline but when people want to buy petroleum jelly they call it Vaseline. Meanwhile, Vaseline has many other products as well. So, its the brand that stays with us its just the main product we forget about..

  55. An anonymous said: “Blackberry batteries last longer than relationships these days.” Brands establish relationship with their customers by providing them products for their stated and UNSTATED needs, thus forming their “Cults” and creating obsession about them.

To make the myth more simple, a PRODUCT is like the ice cream that I can have from the store couple of blocks away, but BRAND is something that compels me to drive for more than 30 minutes, burning fuel more than the cost of McFlurry !!!

  56. A product is something that is offered in market to satisfy consumer needs and wants in exchange of money.and a brand is something that distinguish one company’s products from its competitors.we can say that brand is the identity of the product. For example Honda is the brand and Civic is its product.

  57. we can differentiate product and brands in many ways as :Companies Make Products and Consumers Make Brands. product is made by a company and can be purchased by a consumer while brands are built through consumer perceptions, expectations, and experiences with all products or services under a brand umbrella. Products Can Be Copied and Replaced but Brands Are Unique Products Can Become Obsolete but Brands Can Be Timeless Products Are Instantly Meaningful but Brands Become Meaningful over Time.

  58. we can differentiate product and brands in many ways as :Companies Make Products and Consumers Make Brands. product is made by a company and can be purchased by a consumer while brands are built through consumer perceptions, expectations, and experiences with all products or services under a brand umbrella. Products Can Be Copied and Replaced but Brands Are Unique Products Can Become Obsolete but Brands Can Be Timeless. Products Are Instantly Meaningful but Brands Become Meaningful over Time.

  59. To me, a product is any consumable item that is associated with respect to its “utility”. A World of “product” will have millions of products in different shapes.

A brand on the other hand is something associated to the product’s personality. In a World of brands, you will see millions of products that have distinct faces and personalities along with varying shapes like humans.

  60. A brand gives product a distinction with which people recognize the product and its quality. For example more than ten companies make tissue papers however which one we buy depends on the brand we perceive is better.
we use a particular brand for our emotional satisfaction
A product is any item we use for a purpose. A product no matter where it is coming from will always serve a purpose. How good it serves a purpose will depend entirely on the Brand of the product.
